We celebrate this month’s Local Legend, Julie Norris.
Nominated by Chonteau McElvin, Conscious Culture Director at Spiral Circle Bookstore: Spiral Circle Bookstore is one of Orlando’s oldest independent bookstores and a beloved community hub rooted in spiritual exploration, self-development, and conscious living.
Julie Norris is a steward of belonging and community connection, and a longtime entrepreneur in Orlando, Florida. As the owner of Spiral Circle Bookstore, she continues a legacy of creating spaces where people gather to explore ideas, deepen awareness, and connect in meaningful ways.
Julie’s work in this community spans decades. She was the co-founder of Dandelion Communitea Café, a beloved organic café that became a cornerstone for connection and helped cultivate what is now a thriving localist movement in Central Florida.
I have witnessed her commitment to the community extending beyond physical spaces. She is a loyal friend, fierce leader, and generously gives from her heart.
Julie co-founded the OurLando movement, building pride of place and strengthening local economic relationships. She also spent over a decade as the voice of Front Porch Radio on WPRK 91.5 FM, amplifying stories, ideas, and conversations that matter. Julie is committed to “doing better” as a human and conscious community activist, always committed to using her platform to amplify community voices that are often overlooked.
At Spiral Circle, Julie’s leadership is relational and intentional. She has cultivated more than a bookstore; she has tended a living ecosystem where authors, teachers, small makers, and community members are welcomed, supported, and woven into the fabric of the space. Her work consistently centers on inclusion, thoughtful curation, and the belief that independent businesses are vital to the well-being of a community.
As Spiral Circle evolves, including the addition of the community-centered Jubilee Tea Garden this year, Julie continues to build with the same care and vision that has defined her work from the beginning.
Having spent many years in social work, I recognize the depth of care and consistency required to build and sustain truly inclusive community spaces; Julie embodies this in her leadership.
Her impact is steady, far-reaching, and deeply rooted in community; a true Local Legend.

As AMIBA celebrates its twenty-fifth year, we have added a new section to our newsletter celebrating the entrepreneurs who created legacy businesses. These long-standing enterprises strengthened their own communities while feeding the entire local economy movement.
