The Local Leaders Roundtable met on May 12 to discuss measuring success with Jen Risley, Director of Operations at AMIBA. Matt Cunningham of Civic Economics joined us as a special guest to present enlightening and supportive data from the recent study, The Impact of Shopping Local: An Economic and Carbon Analysis of 5 Common Purchases.
The study was revealing (as all of Civic Economics’ studies are) in taking five common items and looking at the differences in purchasing local products at locally owned businesses, imported products at a multinational company and purchasing online. The study looked at a bicycle, blueberries, bread, a dress and a milk latte. In the case of the bicycle, the recirculated to the community covered a span of .30 in the online purchase compared to $37 in the local purchase—more than 100 times the impact!
