Directory will drive home support for local businesses

By JIM BAINBRIDGE THE GAZETTE

Operating on the theory that it’s hard for people to support local businesses if they don’t know who they are, a local advocacy group is starting work on a Pikes Peak regional directory.

Because of budget and time constraints, the first edition, due in time for the June 18 Springspree, will list only members of the Pikes Peak Independent Business Alliance.

The plan is to make the directories available at the annual downtown event, at all member stores and some in the regular mailings sent out by members and businesses friendly to the alliance’s cause.

In addition to the standard business listing, there are plans to allow advertisements in the directory for an additional charge.

“Ideally, we would like to get the directories to all 500,000 people in the area,” alliance President Andy Gipe said, “but our goals are somewhat lower this first time around.

“Our message is that supporting locally owned businesses keeps more money in the community and is good for our economy.

“We’re not anti-big business; we’re just pro-locally owned business, and we believe having a directory that you can carry in your car or your purse makes it easier for people to keep local businesses in mind.”

The current membership drive is meant to get as many local businesses as possible into the directory and help fund the group’s initiatives, which will better allow small businesses to succeed.

Membership dues are $150 a year. Visit www.ppiba.org.
